We always say that when it comes to cosmetics, expensive is not necessarily better, and false lashes are no exception! There are excellent options available at the chemist shop and online for a fraction of the price of department store lashes. No matter where you buy your lashes, there are a few things to keep in mind.

First, we recommend human hair lashes over lashes made of synthetic hair. Human hair lashes blend easily with the natural lash line and they take mascara much better than synthetic lashes.

Next, if you are buying a full set of lashes, pay attention to the width of the lash strip which is the band that the individual lashes are attached to. A thin or “invisible” lash strip is preferred over a thick or opaque lash strip, as the latter tends to be more obvious. Also, the thinner the lash strip, the more lightweight and comfortable the falsies will be.

Step 1: Remove the lashes from the container by pushing down on the center of the lash strip with your thumb. Do not pull from either end of the strip because you do not want to stretch, rip, or tear the delicate lash strip. If the lashes are difficult to remove by pushing down in the center with your thumb, use tweezers. (Keep the container, just in case you want to save your falsies and wear them again.)

Step 2: Try on your lashes before you apply eye make-up. You will not have to hold them there with your fingers because new lashes generally have a small amount of adhesive left on the lash band. Trying on your lashes before applying eye make-up lets you gauge what they will look like on, and then you can plan your eye design (especially the eyeliner) around your lashes.

Step 3: Apply your eye shadow design, but skip the eyeliner and mascara for now. Most types of eyeliner will affect how the eyelash glue sets. If you must use eyeliner before you apply your lashes, we recommend using a liquid liner or a lightweight gel liner. Eye pencils tend to interfere with how the eyelash glues sets, leading to short-lived results.

Step 4: Before applying the lash strip, gently bend and wiggle the strip. This will help it rest more comfortably against the curvature of your eyelid.

Step 5: Try the lashes on again before setting them with the glue. This is your chance to see if your eye make-up needs to be enhanced or toned down. It is much easier to add more eye make-up before the lash strips are in place and the glue dries.

Step 6: Trim the lashes. Almost everyone needs to trim strip lashes to get them to fit properly. Trim the lash strip so that it ends before your natural lash line thins out at the inner corner of your eye. If the lash strip does not fit your eye shape, you may need to cut the lashes into two parts for a comfortable fit.

Four Extra Tips and Tricks

Try to find false eyelashes with an invisible strip. They are usually lighter and more comfortable to wear.

When trimming your lash strips, start by trimming from the outside corner moving inwards.

If you plan on wearing the eyelashes more than once, avoid applying mascara. Mascara is a great way to blend your natural lashes with the falsies, but for repeat wear you may need to avoid this step. Think of the overall look you are trying to achieve when purchasing your lashes. Consider the color to avoid wearing mascara.

When it is time to remove false eyelashes, do not just pull them off as this can damage your natural lashes. I like to saturate a cotton puff with eye makeup remover and hold against my eye for a few seconds or dip a cotton swab into some makeup remover and gently rub along your lash line to help loosen the glue. Let the makeup remover to sit for a minute, and then gently remove the strip.

These are some of the important things we should know before buying fake lashes. False eyelashes have come a long way since the seventies when women wore huge, gaudy varieties that looked fake. These days, many women from celebrities to beauty nuts to your average, everyday woman who wants to look good without much fuss, wears natural-looking false lashes.
